Over the last year, Tasmania/Lutruwita has seen the number of people living in inadequate or substandard dwellings increase by 63% and people sleeping rough increase by 76%. According to State of Housing Dashboard, it takes 10 years to save for a deposit for a home, there are next to no affordable homes available for low-income earners, and the average wait time for social housing is 89 weeks.
Mapping Housing Rorts is a collective of people with lived experience of Tasmania’s housing crisis, and their allies. We are mapping the housing stories of ordinary people, with the aim of creating change.
The homes and houses you report will be added to this map. As we are unable to verify the details of dodgy rentals, and we want to protect the privacy and housing security of tenants, we map dodgy rentals at the suburb-level rather than by street address. We do our best to verify reports of vacant houses. If a house is verified as vacant this is indicated on the map. We also map the rental portfolios of mega-landlords based onLands Titles Office records.
We acknowledge that this mapping project covers the stolen and unceded lands of the Palawa of Lutruwita/Tasmania and we pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging. We recognise that First Nations peoples are first and foremost affected by displacement, dispossession, and housing insecurity, and that the struggle for adequate housing is a struggle for decolonisation.
